In the 1960s, Wonder Bread had a slogan: “Wonder Bread helps build strong bodies 12 ways." Now you might think, how could that white bread that was made from refined, bleached flour be healthy? Well, the 12 ways referred to the number of added nutrients.
There is another type of bread that every Intentional Christian needs to eat if he or she is to grow healthy, and it will build a strong life in more than 12 ways. It is the Word of God. Jesus said, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4, NIV)
While there are so many benefits to feasting on the words of God, here are three reasons to add the Bible into your daily diet:
1. God’s Word feeds hungry hearts.
Just as our physical body needs food for nourishment, our spirit also needs daily nourishment.
Jeremiah said, “Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart.” (Jeremiah 15:16, NIV) That’s exactly what reading and meditating upon God’s Word can do – bring joy to your heart and satisfy the emptiness of your soul.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger.” (John 6:35, NIV)
2. God’s Word is the source of practical wisdom.
King David wrote: “The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” (Psalm 19:7, NIV) Herbert Hoover defined wisdom as "knowing what to do next." When you have a consistent life in the Word of God, you know what to do next. As you read Scripture day after day, you will be amazed at how often you receive clear direction for the situations you face.
3. God meets us in our point of need through His Word.
When you read God’s Word daily, you will find that He will meet you exactly where you are at in your life. That is why Job, who lost everything, could say: My foot has held fast to His path; I have kept His way and not turned aside. I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. (Job 23:11-12, NIV)
God’s Word will meet you at your point of need and can even become more valuable to you than your necessary food. Eat away!
