Shooting in Texas

Three people were wounded yesterday afternoon when gunfire erupted at a Houston-area community college. Authorities confirmed at a news conference that two "persons of interest" were involved and wounded in an altercation at the North Harris campus of Lone Star College. NBC News reports a maintenance worker at the college was also shot in the leg during the crossfire, said Maj. Armando Tello. Police later said 22 year old Carlton Berry was charged with aggravated assault.

Mesa Helicopter Crash

He was flying his homemade helicopter yesterday when something went terribly wrong. So pilot Joe Goetz had to crash land it in his Mesa neighborhood. While the air craft obviously had issues flying, Goetz apparently built it strong enough to handle the crash landing, as he was able to walk away from the wreckage. The quote of the day comes from witness Dale Scott, who said, "You can buy another helicopter, but you can't buy another life."

Work

The Career Game

When I was a kid we played a board game called “Careers.” Today’s technology is changing the rules of the job-search and hiring game in a lot of ways. According to a recent study from Harvard, nearly 75% of all jobs come through networking. Technology can create a more level playing field for your contact management if you keep up with it. Digital communications via your PC or tablet or smart phone—or even the local library computer—can help you keep those networking contacts fresh and helpful as you “play the game” of building a career.

Have you been waiting for the housing market to get better before you try to sell your house? If the 2012 trend continues, you might have a pretty good chance to sell it this year. The National Association of Realtors says existing home sales remain higher than they were a year ago, with 2012 the best for home sales in five years, and average home price rose the most since 2005.

Heart Attack Recovery

Doctors are trying to figure out why heart attack patients seem to be readmitted soon thereafter. Doctor Harlan Krumholz looked at records of patients who were readmitted to the hospital within one month’s time. Researchers looked at why the patients were readmitted and how close after the heart attack. He says we need to provide support for patients as they get better. The study appears in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association.

ADHD Diagnoses Climb

More kids are being diagnosed with A-D-H-D. In the last decade, the growth rate has been 24 percent. That’s about five percent of all kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. 843 thousand children in America are not able to sit still, move constantly and often are impatient. Web MD says those are some of the symptoms. This new number on growth rate is published in the journal Pediatrics.

Confused deer joins flock of sheep

English Shepherd Andrew Capell was shocked when he was counting his sheep and noticed a new member of the flock. It was a male red deer! He believes the lost deer became separated from its herd and attached itself to his flock. Capell says, “He seems to have adopted the flock and stayed with them and the flock have taken to him really well. There's a bit of a pecking order in the flock so he's finding his place within it. He seems to be the bottom of the ladder."
