Something Eternal

Amy Grant Looks for that “Great Other” from God

When Amy Grant looks to be more intentional, she’s hoping it’ll mean getting knocked off track more often.

At age 50, the six-time Grammy award winning singer, songwriter and pioneer of contemporary Christian music says her career—and more importantly, her life—is now in an interesting and challenging season.

She’s reunited with longtime friend and colleague Michael W. Smith for the “2 Friends Tour” while releasing her first album of all-new music in seven years, Somewhere Down the Road.

At the same time, Amy and her three sisters are dealing with the difficulty of having both of her parents suffering from dementia. After recently telling her mom she was about to go sing at a concert, Amy’s mom told her, “I didn’t know you sang.” Then, even in her confusion, her mom told her to be sure to “sing something that matters.” A bittersweet exhortation Amy certainly takes to heart.

“I am personally moved by the concept of our journey through life,” Amy said, “and because of all the years that have come before, I find myself in a unique and somewhat rare position to be able to sing about that journey, and that’s an opportunity I don’t want to miss.”

Amy also has a passion to be more focused on the opportunities God places in her path to do something outside of her “game plan” for the day, opportunities that’ll make a difference for Him.

“When I’m knocked off track from my plan for the day, especially when it comes from a nudge that says, ‘I think I need to do something a little different, I think I need to call this person or feel like I need to write a letter’ just that great other thing that comes to you, I think a lot of times that is the Holy Spirit. I would love in 2011 to just have a greater awareness of that… and just act on that… to get in the flow of something eternal.”
