Building 429

Serving Others

Building 429 Gets Back to the Basics

How important is a band’s name? Ask any member of Building 429 and they’ll tell you, “It’s very important.” In fact, their name is also their mission statement.

With a name taken from Ephesians 4:29, this pop/rock band is intentional in their message to build others up. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

The founding members felt strongly about forming a band that would focus on uplifting others through music. In 2005, the band was named New Artist of the Year by the Gospel Music Association and "Glory Defined" was named BMI’s Christian Song of the Year. Other hits soon followed: "Above It All," "The Space In Between Us" and "No One Else Knows."

Through the years, Building 429 has occasionally struggled with doing what God has actually called them to do as success sometimes caused them to forget who they should be serving. For this reason, the band is now being more intentional in serving others.

“A lot of times we lose sight of the fact that we can be very, very busy at work for God and not actually doing the things God himself wants us to do,” explains Jason Roy, lead vocalist. “This season for us is really about getting back to the basics of being Christ-like and, in so [doing], being a servant.”

Originally writing 65 songs for their self-titled project, Building 429, they ultimately set aside most of those tracks to insure the songs on the release would reflect the benefits of surrendering control to Christ and the basic principle of serving others.

“It either says we are amazingly bad writers or that we worked very, very hard at getting the right songs,” says Jason. “That place where we end and God begins is the place that this record was kind of written out of.”
