Laura Story Puts Marriage Before Ministry
What’s the most challenging and difficult part of being a church worship leader, a recording artist, a touring singer, a seminary student and a wife?“Figuring out how to do all of that,” answers Laura Story.Despite her busy schedule, Laura is learning to be more intentional in the most important part of her life—her marriage.Beginning her music career as a bass player with the band Silers Bald, Laura released four albums before embarking on a solo career. Her first solo album produced the song Indescribable, made popular by Chris Tomlin and sung in worship services across the country. The multi-talented singer/songwriter has been nominated numerous times for Dove Awards, winning “Inspirational Album of the Year” in 2009 for the album Great God Who Saves.Drawing inspiration from her marriage, Laura’s newest project, Blessings, reflects the experience that she and her husband, Martin Elvington, went through. The year after they were married, Martin was diagnosed with a brain tumor.“Life is filled with things you don’t expect, but the Bible tells us to respond by trusting God and continuing to worship Him,” Laura explains. “We have a voice that wasn’t there prior to this suffering. I can hardly begin to tell you of the hundreds of hurting people we’ve prayed with, people going through more than we have. This is a chance to share the gospel.”The high school sweethearts’ circumstances have magnified the blessing of marriage. “Once you’ve rallied through a life-threatening illness together, the rest of it is like a surprise; every day is a new gift that might not have been there. It’s not as big a deal now if he leaves his socks on the floor,” Laura says with a smile. This year Laura is learning to be more intentional about her marriage by saying “no” to things. “Even though it’s hard to say ‘no’ [because] it’s hard to let people down, I’m learning that it’s really the key to having a successful marriage.”
