Steven Curtis Chapman: Intentionally Following His Faithful God

Music and life often merge. And for Steven Curtis Chapman, music and life come together in a profoundly personal way in his newest release Re:creation.

Re:creation features six new songs including the debut hit single “Do Everything”. Chapman’s most memorable and popular songs such as “More to This Life,” “For The Sake of The Call” and “The Great Adventure” showcase re-imagined approaches and all new recordings on Re:creation.

Chapman says the original thought for the project came from singing the songs he’d written years ago and discovering a new place and passion. Chapman, his wife Mary Beth and family have a new perspective given the death of their youngest daughter Maria in an accident in 2008.

“We’re in a season of recreation in our hearts and lives,” he said. “We really do have a sense God is bringing new joy into our lives; new hope, not just for the day that’s coming when we’re going to see her again, but for today. He’s giving us new things to celebrate.”

Chapman cites “The Great Adventure” as just one example. “When I wrote that, it meant a lot to me then, but I’ve now lived a lot of that adventure. The mountains have been higher, and the valleys have been much deeper than I imagined, and yet God has been faithful,” he said. “I hope is that this new music will say, ‘Wow! God has really been faithful in their lives. If He’s faithful in their lives, then He will be faithful in my life’.”

Married now for 27 years, Chapman says one secret to longevity as a husband is putting God first in his relationship with Mary Beth. “Before we go to sleep every night, I try to read just a few verses of Scripture to her and pray,” he said. “Many times my wife will say she’s asleep by the time the first verse or two are read, which I actually think is a beautiful thing that she would fall asleep as I’m praying and reading.”

Chapman remains ever-thankful for his many listeners, old and new. “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to share the messages I feel like God entrusts to me and lets me write songs about,” he said. “Pray that in this new season that we’re walking into that we really will just know how to steward what we feel like God has entrusted to us.”
