He Is Already There

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

— Zephaniah 3:17

From the time humans first reached toward the stars in the 1950s and‘60s, many of the astronauts, who have gone to space, have taken their faith with them. From the crew of Apollo 8, who read from the book of Genesis, to Col. Jeff Williams, who spoke to a chapel service from the International Space Station (ISS), they’ve discovered that the more we explore God’s creation, the more we find that He is already there.

The ISS orbits the earth 16 times a day, which provides a unique perspective on our planet. As Col. Williams pointed out during a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary chapel, it’s a new view on the creative work of God. “You see the design. You see the beauty. You see the purpose. You see all of those elements. You see order in all of the details.”

All of God’s creation reminds us of what the Old Testament prophets already knew: He lives among us; delights in us; calms our fears. He never leaves us, no matter how far we wander or explore. He loves us, and when we turn to Him, God embraces us as beloved children.
