Hopeful Surprise

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

—Romans 15:13

God uses the element of surprise to speak to us. Sometimes through strangers that eventually reveal themselves as divine appointments, new ideas or unusual (but timely) experiences.

In Exodus 3, a burning bush caught Moses’ attention. He watched as the bush (that should have been consumed by the fire) refused to burn, and it made him very curious. Captivated, he stepped closer to inspect it.

Even more unexpected, imagine Moses’ surprise when God called his name from within the bush. That definitely got his full attention. That supernatural demonstration of God’s power prepared Moses to listen to God and accept His counsel and guidance. This became one of many times in Moses’ lifetime when God stepped up and showed Himself in a visible way to encourage and guide His people in the way He wanted them to go.

God still shows up in many ways in our lives today. Perhaps God saved you from a car crash, kept you out of the line of fire or diverted you from near financial disaster. Whenever something happened that you didn’t understand or couldn’t explain, imagine God standing right beside you, filling you with hope and encouragement for the journey ahead.

Today’s One Thing

Give God thanks today and expect Him to continue to guide you with the element of surprise.
