Word for Your Life

Therefore encourage one another & build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11

A Year with Aslan from Prince Caspian

Our love can’t be like God’s, but it should at least be more amazing than the world’s. In today’s devotion, Susan shows a bit of that love in her tenderness toward Trumpkin.

Trumpkin has just been beaten in a contest of swords with Edmund, & then decides to take on Susan in an archery contest. He shoots at the target, an apple, & just skims it.  Susan hits it dead center & knocks it down, but instead of gloating she says ..

It wasn’t really any better than yours.  I think there was a tiny breath of wind as you shot.

If we believe the Bible to be true, there are obviously going to be times when those who don’t believe it will be proven wrong. However, God has us here to be concerned with our fellow man, & that means showing grace.

A-W Tozer ~ Men Who Met God

Very few of us know the secret of bathing our souls in silence. There were times when (Jesus) had to send the multitudes away so He could retire alone into the silence of the mountainside. There He would turn His soul toward heaven & expose Himself to the face of His Father..But all the signs of immaturity are among us.  We abhor being alone, being silent.  The more noise we make, the happier we seem to be.

Pastor Rick Warren ~ Daily Hope Devotion

One reason why you need to be connected to a church family is to fulfill your calling.  The Bible says “All of you together are Christ’s body, & each one of you is a part of it.”  & there’s no correlation between size & significance.  The most important light in my home, he says, isn’t the large chandelier, it’s the night light that keeps me from stubbing my toe when I get up in the night.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

Most of the time when we’re singing a song of hop, it’s because things aren’t all that hopeful. 1 Chronicles 16, David tells the worshipers to give thanks to God & remember the wonders He has done.  No matter how tough your week has been, there have undoubtedly been times when the love of God has pierced through that darkness.  Those are the times to hang onto – that provide the background music to your own song of hope.

Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; his face always. Remember the wonders he has done …

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

The bible tells of angels who strike fear in the hearts of those to whom they appear.  In the Old Testament, one angel puts to death 185,000 men in an enemy camp. Revelation 18 tells of an angel lights up the earth with his splendor.  The glorious beings so commanding they inspire fear & trembling, bow down at the sight of the One who is altogether MORE glorious.

C.S. Lewis ~ Mere Christianity

If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.

John Blundell ~ Ladies For Liberty (Link to Full Article)

She (Anne Hutchinson) was born in England .. Her father was a school teacher & a preacher, who criticized the church for promoting badly educated men.  He set up a home school for his girls, which was pretty rare.  She was a radical too, as a big proponent of a “covenant of grace” – that everyone could enter Heaven by developing a personal relationship with God. She came to America in the 1630s – & after a while set up Bible studies in her home – & she didn’t pull any punches, even disagreeing with the male preachers.  She stepped on so many toes they kicked her out of Massachusetts, so she moved to Providence – & is the only woman to co-found a state.

Oswald Chambers ~ If You Will Ask

The Holy Spirit, when He comes into our life, works out in us the understanding of sin that God has.  There are tremendous thoughts expressed in God’s Word, & while we may think “I’ll never understand that”, the Spirit in us does.  We just have to learn to think spiritually.

Charles Wesley’s mom, upon his conversion

I think you’ve come into an odd way of thinking.  You say you had no spiritual life, no faith, & while I rejoice that you’ve attained this hope – it’s another thing to be sensible of having it.
