The Fourth Candle of Advent (Peace)

In many traditions the fourth week of Advent is when we light the Candle of Joy, reminding us that Jesus comes to bring peace to both the world and to people’s hearts. Without Christ there is no peace in this world.

Prophetic Verse: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given. And the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6-7

Fulfillment of Prophecy: “…the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1: 78b-79

“And when the parents brought in the Christ Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: ‘Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; a light to bring revleation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel. Luke 2: 27b-32

Verse of the Day

“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.”  ~ Psalm 126:5

Third Week of Advent

Some suggested scripture readings for the third Sunday of Advent, from the Book of Common Prayer.

  • Old Testament Reading  –  Isaiah 65:17-25
  • New Testament Reading – 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28
  • Gospel Reading – John 1:6-8, 19-28
  • Psalms Reading – Psalm 126

The Third Candle of Advent (Joy)

In most traditions the third week of Advent is when we light the pink candle, or the Candle of Joy.  It’s pink to symbolize a shift away from repentance, toward celebration.

Prophetic Verse: “And the ransomed of the LORD will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.” ~ Isaiah 35:10
Fulfillment: “Then as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olive, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, saying: ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’” ~ Luke 19:37-38
Ultimate Completion: “And Jesus said to him, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.’”

Verse of the Day

“Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.”  ~ Psalm 85:9

Second Week of Advent

Some suggested scripture readings for the second Sunday of Advent, from the Book of Common Prayer.

  • Old Testament Reading  –  Isaiah 40:1-11
  • New Testament Reading – 2 Peter 3:8-18
  • Gospel Reading – Mark 1:1-8
  • Psalms Reading – Psalm 85:7-13

The Second Candle of Advent (The Way)

In some traditions the second candle is called the Candle of the Way, showing Christ is the only way to God.  Christians are lost in sin and Christ is the Light sent into the world to show them the way out of darkness.

Leading Us to the Kingdom of Heaven: “In those days, John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come now.” Matthew 3: 1-2

Jesus’ Proclamation of His Purpose: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” John 14: 6
