Word for Your Life

The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble. ~ Proverbs 19:23

A Year with Aslan from The Horse & His Boy

Not only is God indescribable, but often so are his ways.  It needs to be okay that WE walk with Him, while other’s don’t understand.

Lavaraleen keeps trying to convince Aravis to marry this great man who everybody says is going to one of the greatest men in the kingdom, but Aravis isn’t interested.

She wants to go to Narnia with Shasta, a simple peasant .. & when Lavaraleen tells her she’s crazy, because he’s a nobody, Aravis says ..

You forget that I’ll be nobody just like him.

Perhaps one of the most difficult things to embrace is being nobody in this world – & trusting that in HIS kingdom, we’re more than conquerors.

A-W Tozer ~ Man: The Dwelling Place of God

When we’re free to go, where do we go? In what company do we feel most at home? Where do our thoughts turn, when the pressure of work or school has lifted, what do we think of then? The answer to these questions may tell us more about ourselves than we can comfortably accept.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

Being called out on the water, like Peter was, can be pretty crazy – especially if the winds & the waves are blowing.  Doubt can be a lot like those storms.

Doubt can be like a tsunami, but instead of tossing cars around it tosses your faith around.  & the person who allows doubt to prevail is unstable, unable to make decisions.

How do we conquer that?  James 1 provides the answer:

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault…But when you ask, you must believe & not doubt.

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

All worship, is a response to revelation.  In worship, explanation gives way to mystery – & mystery leads to reverence & awe.  Where no melody expresses it beautifully enough, & our lives become the songs – & we become awestruck.

Francis Chan ~ Forgotten God

As a church, we tend to tell people who are passionate to mellow out.  Deaden them to the work the Spirit is doing in them.  But in Acts 4, it was just the opposite.  Peter & John, having just been released from prison, went to the others – who prayed they would be even more bold.  Instead of thinking people are crazy, we should join them.

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

We have 2 choices in the face of such beauty:  Terror & Awe.  This is why we attempt to chart God, to dissect Him.  We are too proud to feel awe & too fearful to feel terror.

John Eldredge ~ Wild At Heart

A soldier…needs to combine a strong desire for living with a strange carelessness about dying. He must seek his life in a spirit of furious indifference to it; he must desire life like water and yet drink death like wine.

Philip Yancey ~ What’s So Amazing About Grace?

Grace is everywhere, like lenses that go unnoticed because you are looking thru them.  Religious faith, despite its maddening tendency to replicate ungrace, lives on because we sense the beauty of a gift undeserved that comes at unexpected moments from Outside .. & we hope against hope for another place run by different rules.

Word for Your Life

“Life will be brighter than noonday, & darkness will become like morning. ~ Job 11:17

A Year with Aslan from The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe

Even when the world seems dark, there are usually signs that God is here.  As Mr. Beaver is looking out over a ledge & sees Father Christmas is coming, he says to Peter ..

Come & see!  It looks as if the White Witch’s power is already crumbling.

And as Father Christmas arrives he confirms, that the witch has …

… kept me out for a long time, but I have got in at last.  Aslan is on the move.  The Witch’s magic is weakening.

Then it goes on to say…

Lucy felt running thru her that deep shiver of gladness which you only get if you’re being solemn & still.

Maybe your world has been rocked a bit this week, or you’ve gotten lost a bit in all the noise – Be still, & know, & look for the signs.

A-W Tozer ~ Tozer on Worship & Entertainment

I can lose the fellowship of God & the sense of His presence by just thinking wrong.  You can’t do anything with your heart, but you can control your thoughts.  Make your thoughts a sanctuary that God can inhabit, & if you keep those thoughts pure, the chimes can be heard ringing out “Holy, Holy, Holy” in the morning air.

Matthew Henry ~ A Method for Prayer

Who in the heavens, among the sons of the mighty, can be compared to the Lord ? Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord.  Neither are there any works like your works; for you are great, and do wondrous things; There isn’t a creature that has an arm like God, or can thunder with [his] voice.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

Being able to see Him & feel Him is one of those great wonders that can help you get through those times when it seems like you’re out of the frying pan & into the fire.

Psalm 28:2 reminds us…

Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help.

Our help comes from the Lord, but the requirement on our part is to cry out & obey. As we do, we find that not only does our belief grow – those around us can see our tenacious trust.

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

I love the lead up to Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, when He sends His disciples to a certain house to fetch a colt that has never been ridden.  It speaks of the otherness of the Son of God.  In the Old Testament, God gave the people instructions on how to make up a special anointing oil only to be used in worship.  It’s set apart & sacred.  & we too should make room in our worship to respond to God with offerings we give to no one else.

David Roper ~ A Heart of Wisdom

[In Genesis]…Every other creation day had a beginning & an end, but not the Sabbath.  It is timeless, eternal.  It remains.  [So we can have] the rest of salvation, because nothing more can be done.  & the rest of sanctification: because Jesus is the one who began a good work in you, & He is able to complete it.

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

Wonder is that feeling we get when we let go of our silly answers, our mapped out rules that we want God to follow.

Lewis Smedes ~ How Can It Be All Right When Everything Is Wrong?

Grace isn’t a ticket to Fantasy Island…not a potion to charm life to our liking; Grace doesn’t cure all our cancers, transform all our kids into winners, or send us soaring into success.  Grace is rather an amazing power to look reality full in the face, see its sad & tragic edges, feel its cruel cuts, & yet feel in your deepest being that it’s good & right for you to be alive.

Word for Your Life

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, & the one who is wise saves lives. ~ Proverbs 11:30

A Year with Aslan from The Last Battle

For now all we can do is imagine what heaven will be like, but for some – that’s all they’ll ever be able to do.
When Lucy & the others run into a group of dwarfs, it soon becomes apparent that the dwarves are blind, but they think it’s just dark out.

Lucy says..

Can’t you see?  Look up! Look around! Can’t you see the sky, the trees & the flowers?  Can’t you see me?”

& one of the dwarves answers…

How in the name of all Humbug can I see what ain’t there?

It may be one of the hardest things about living in a world that’s not our home.  No matter how hard we try, we can’t make people see what is plain to those with eyes of faith.

A-W Tozer ~ Faith Beyond Reason

Every person is what they secretly admire.  You can train a chimp to carry a Bible, but every one of us is the sum of what we think about when we’re free to think about whatever we want to.

CS Lewis ~ Mere Christianity

If you read history you’ll find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this [one].

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

Combine his firm grip with his firm foundation, & you’re in good hands.

Matthew 7:24 says ..

Everyone who hears these words of mine & puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

What that does is bring stability to every area of your life .. faith, finances, family, & more.

Francis Chan ~ Joy of Discipleship

When speaking at a conference, Francis Chan shared a conversation with another pastor, who told him…

I used to be funny..but the stories you run into & the pain people go thru, not to mention the criticism, all start building up & pretty soon nothing’s funny anymore.

& Francis Chan says what that leads to is that we get into a kind of safe zone in our ministry, where we just focus on preparing a good service whether God’s spirit shows up or not.

David Roper ~ A Heart of Wisdom

It’s good not only to tell our story, but to write it down for the next generation.  & perhaps someday, someone will read our story & make something of themselves that we couldn’t make of ourselves – for those who come behind ought always to go beyond us.

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

God doesn’t withhold love to teach me a lesson… [but] God’s love will never change you if you don’t accept it…

Word for Your Life

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light, we see light. ~ Psalm 36:9

A Year with Aslan from The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe

As Aslan is being led to the stone table, the White Witch orders him to be shaved & her followers are shouting at him.  He’s all tied up, yet it says ..

Even now…one bite from his jaws would have cost 2 or 3 of them their hands, but he never moved.  & this seemed to enrage all that rabble.  Everyone was at him now.  Those who had been afraid to come near him even after he was bound began to find their courage…

The world loves to kick you when you’re down. Being strong isn’t just wiping them out – it takes more strength to do nothing.

A-W Tozer ~ Men Who Met God

As Elijah fled to the wilderness, God sent big scavenger birds each morning & evening with Elijah’s meals. What humiliation! All his life Elijah had been self-sufficient. Now he waited on birds to deliver his daily bread….

Pastor Rick Warren ~ Daily Hope Devotion

How do you get past your hurt, or fix an unfixable problem?

  • Call out:  Admit you’re inadequate & cry out to God.
  • Fill your mind with God’s Word.
  • Accept support from God’s people.  Iron sharpens iron.
  • Hold on to God’s promises.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

In his letter to the Philippian church, the Apostle Paul said …

For to me, to live is Christ & to die is gain.

That was written from a prison cell.  It would be easy in a time like that to be down, but when you have a timeless perspective – & Christ is your most prized possession – you can get through even the toughest of days, in His power.

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

There must be times in our worship services when we … journey from “Here I am.  Meet me” to “Here I am. Send me.”  Sometimes in our worship, the only thing left to do is to go.  Worship is the fuel for the mission’s flame.

Frederick Douglass ~ Narrative of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave

The silver trump of freedom had roused my soul to eternal wakefulness.  I saw nothing without seeing it, I heard nothing without hearing it, & felt nothing without feeling it.  It looked from every star, smiled in every calm, breathed in every wind, & moved in every storm.

Psalm 11:4-7

Word for Your Life

You, Lord, took up my case; You redeemed my life. ~ Lamentations 3:58

A Year with Aslan from Prince Caspian

Lucy runs & seen Aslan, at long last.

Aslan rolled over on his side so that Lucy fell, half sitting & half lying down between his front paws.  His warm breath was all around her.  She gazed up & said “Aslan?  You’re bigger!”  & Aslan says “That’s because you are older.  Every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”

A-W Tozer ~ Faith Beyond Reason

There are certain things that you & I will never learn in the presence of other people…Part of our failure today is religious activity that is not preceded by aloneness, by inactivity…Getting alone with God & waiting in silence until we’re charged with God’s Spirit. Then, when we act, our activity really amounts to something because we have been prepared by God for it.

Pastor Rick Warren ~ Daily Hope Devotion

What happens when we live God’s way? We develop a willingness to stick with things.  A good place to start is to Move toward joy.  If you think of it as drudgery, your motivation disappears.  But if you direct your energies wisely & do something you enjoy, you’ll find the motivation.

That’s true for exercise, but I think it can be true for spiritual disciplines too .. like praying & reading your Bible. Start with what you enjoy – & as you grow, keep moving.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

We were made to worship, & when we do that we often lift our hands.  But if you think about it, our hands were made for more than that.

Proverbs 10:26 tells us –

As vinegar to the teeth & smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him.

So if we’re not lifting our hands in service to Christ, it’s like we’re smoke that’s getting in Jesus’ eyes.  So let’s be more like the ants .. considering their ways, & be considered wise …

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

There are hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy alone.  & astronomers now believe there are at least 140 billion OTHER galaxies.  Scientists estimate there are 10x more stars than there are grains of sand on all of the world’s beaches & deserts.  We are smaller than we thought & God is greater than we had ever imagined.

Oswald Chambers ~ My Utmost for His Highest

God begins to bring us to the point where we can have fellowship with him, only to hear us moan & groan “Let me be like other people.”  Jesus is asking us to get beside him so we can pull together.  The burden God places on us squeezes the grapes in our lives & makes the wine.

Old Swiss Proverb

There once was a little Swiss village that had this beautiful old church, with big stained glass windows & the most amazing, old pipe organ around. The problem was the organ was out of tune.

They had people from all over the world come to try to fix it, but they just seemed to make it worse. But one day an old man appeared at the church door & said he wanted to try his hand at fixing it.

They let him & after a couple of days, the whole countryside could hear the beautiful music again. When they asked him how he did it – he said simply “It was I who built it.”

In the same way, when we’re in need of repair, we go to our Creator – `cuz fixing us is an inside job...

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

We don’t believe things because we believe them anymore.  We believe them because it’s cool to believe them.  What I believe is not what I say I believe .. What I believe is what I do.

Cyprian ~ 3rd Century martyr

If I were to ascend some high mountain & look out over the lands, you know what I’d see?  Bandits on the highways; pirates on the sea; armies fighting; cities burning; men murdered to please the applauding crowds; selfishness, cruelty, misery, & despair.  But in the midst of it, are a quiet & holy people who learned a great secret.  They’re despised & persecuted, but they don’t care.  They have overcome the world.  These people are the Christians .. & I am one of them.

David Roper ~ A Heart for Wisdom

Our most outrageous & often-repeated sins have been forgiven according to God’s mercy & grace.  & grace means that God has given us the resources to make a new beginning.  The question is not “Can I make it? Am I able? Can I overcome? The question is “Is HE able? Can HE transform me?

Colossians 1:25-26
