Word for Your Life
Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge & understanding. ~ Jeremiah 3:15

A Year with Aslan from The Last Battle

As everyone is approaching some incredible fruit trees, it all looks so amazing they’re afraid to take it. They finally get the okay from Peter, & it goes on to say that ..

Compared with those fruits, the freshest grapefruit you’ve ever eaten is dull, the juiciest orange was dry, the most melting pear was hard, & the sweetest strawberry was sour.  If you had once eaten that fruit, all the nicest things in this world would taste like medicines after it .. but you can’t find out what it’s like unless you can get to that country & taste it for yourself.

We can try to describe what God has done – & how our lives have been changed – but the growth of the seed is not our territory, & ultimately the kingdom of God has to take root in each heart.

Psalm 49:3 says…

My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the utterance from my heart will give understanding.

There are a lot of people saying a lot of things these days .. & some of them may have the appearance of wisdom, but Jesus said …

Wisdom is proved right by her actions.

So today’s One Thing for us is that we can’t stop at the ability to discern.  We have to act on it.

A.W. Tozer ~ The Counselor

I think we’re the busiest bunch of eager beavers ever seen in the religious world.  The idea seems to be that if we’re not running around in a circle we’re not pleasing God.  We flit around in the sunshine like butterflies & imagine we’re eagles.  Sometimes I think we’d be better off to call a moratorium on activity & just wait on God to see what He’s waiting to do for us.  That’s what they did before Pentecost.

Phillip Yancey ~ What’s So Amazing About Grace?

The kingdom of God thrives where its subjects follow the desires of the King.

Leo Tolstoy

A man who professes an external law is like someone standing in the light of a lantern fixed to a post.  It is light all around him, but there is nowhere further for him to walk.  A man who professes the teaching of Christ is like a man carrying a lantern before him on a pole.  The light is in front of him, always lighting up fresh ground & always encouraging him to walk further.

Lin Yutang ~ Chinese writer

I like best of all autumn, because its leaves are a little yellow, its tone mellower, its colors richer, & it’s tinged with a little sorrow.  It’s golden richness speaks not of the innocence of spring, nor the power of summer, but of the kindly wisdom of approaching age.  It knows the limitations of life – & is content.

David Roper ~ A Heart of Wisdom

I ask myself “Why do we have to die? God has put eternity in our hearts!” & the answer comes as a complete surprise.  Death is not our lot – it’s our sentence.  We are mortal because we are sinful.  So what will take away our fear?  It is the promise of a morning that rends the skies.

Oswald Chambers ~ My Utmost for His Highest

Perseverance means more than endurance— more than simply holding on until the end. A saint’s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, but our Lord continues to stretch and strain, and every once in a while the saint says, “I can’t take any more.” Yet God pays no attention; He goes on stretching until His purpose is in sight, and then He lets the arrow fly.

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

Worship thrives on wonder.  For worship to be worship, it must contain something of (what he calls) the Otherness of God. Time after time we find ourselves amazed by the blessings he lavishes on us, but let’s not be fooled into thinking that this story is all about us.  It never has been, & it never will be.

Now then, you & all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give them… ~ Joshua 1:2

A Year with Aslan from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

When you’re in charge, when you reign over something, that comes with certain responsibilities.

Our heroes have vanquished the foes, & Caspian announces that he’s turning the ship over to Drinian – & he’s following Reepicheep to see the World’s End.  His thinking is “I’m in charge – you’re my subjects – I can do this if I want.”

But Reepicheep becomes the voice of reason, & says ..

You’re the King of Narnia.  You break faith with your subjects if you don’t return.  You can’t please yourself with adventures as if you were a private person.  & if your Majesty will not hear reason, it will be the truest loyalty of every man on board to follow me in disarming you until you come to your senses.

There are a lot of things we’d “like” to do.  & Christ’s sacrifice does mean we’re free.  But freedom comes with responsibilities.

& remember we weren’t just freed – we were bought at a price.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

We’re all drawn to beauty, & that’s one of the reasons we have to be careful how we define it, because the enemy is all to eager to put those temptations in front of us.

Malachi 2:15 says…

Guard yourself in your spirit, & don’t break faith with the wife of your youth.

When Satan tempts us, he does it with attractive, even innocent looking packages.  But if we’re not careful, those relationships can entangle you – & wreck what God has planned.

So today’s One Thing for us is just jot down 5 things you love & respect – about your spouse if you’re married, or maybe about what you’re looking for in a spouse if you’re single.  & then ask God to reinforce them in your heart.

A.W. Tozer ~ Renewed Day By Day

The fall of man has created a perpetual crisis. It will last until sin has been put down and Christ reigns over a restored world. Until that time the earth remains a disaster area .. It’s always been difficult to understand those Christians who insist upon living in the crisis as if no crisis existed. They divide their days so as to leave plenty of time to play & loaf – they are at ease while the world burns.

Phillip Yancey ~ What’s So Amazing About Grace?

The image Jesus used to describe the church’s destiny – “the gates of hell will not prevail against it” – is a metaphor of offense, not defense.  Christians are storming the gates, & they will prevail.  Not matter how it looks at any point in history, the gates guarding the powers of evil will not withstand an assault by grace.

Louie Giglio ~ Indescribable

Scientists aren’t entirely sure just how big the universe is, but one thing is clear: We’re really small.  In fact, earth itself is inconsequential amid the expanse of space.  But if you look closely enough at the pale blue dot, you’ll find, beside a busy roadway, just outside a small city, on a hot afternoon thousands of years ago, a cross that stills looms ever so large in history .. where hung God, in human flesh.

Booker T. Washington

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.

Brennan Manning ~ The Ragamuffin Gospel

I’ve been given the utterly undeserved gift of salvation in Jesus Christ.  Thru no merit of mine, I have been given a bona fide invitation to drink new wine forever at the wedding feast in the kingdom of God – but sometimes I get so involved with myself that I start making demands for things I think I deserve, or I take of granted every gift that comes my way.

CS Lewis ~ Mere Christianity

If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next.

David Roper ~ A Heart of Wisdom

Pain, far from being an obstacle to our spiritual growth, can be the condition of it.  God will discipline the ungodly in due time, but he must first discipline & teach His own children – because a good Father begins with his own family. & without pain, God could never make the most of our lives.

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

In some ways we treat our neighbors BETTER than we treat ourselves, because we would never say the things to a neighbor that we tell ourselves every day.  We don’t believe it’s okay to kick people around, but we do it to ourselves all the time.

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

When it comes to expressing our worship, what we do on the outside is a key reflection of what’s taking place on the inside.  Facedown worship always begins as a posture of the heart.  God will one day invade.  There’s no use saying you choose to lie down when it’s become impossible to stand up.

Let us rejoice & be glad & give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, & his bride has made herself ready. ~ Revelation 19:7

A Year with Aslan from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Eustace has come up missing .. & as Prince Caspian is trying to organize a rescue party, one of the crew mumbles “good riddance”, but is quickly rebuked by Reepicheep.

You never spoke a word that became you less.  The creature is no friend of mine but he’s of the Queen’s blood, & while he’s one of our fellowship it concerns our honor to find him & avenge him if he’s dead.

We would do well to remember that kind of honor in our interactions with friends…& enemies…face to face, or on Facebook.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

When we talk to God, even though He’s called us friend, we must not forget who He is.

There was a boy who asked a businessman for $10,000.  The businessman said “Son, do you have any idea who you’re talking to?”  To which the boy replied – “Yeah.  I’m talking to the man who’s rich enough to pay for the operation that will save my mom’s life.”

The same is true for us.  When we’re praying we’re talking to the Creator, Sustainer, Healer, Provider, & Author of our faith – & his name is to be honored.

A.W. Tozer ~ That Incredible Christian

Before the judgment seat of Christ my service will be judged not by how much I’ve done but by how much I could’ve done. In God’s sight my giving is measured not by how much I have given but by how much I could have given, & how much I had left after I made my gift.  In the work of the church the amount one man must do to accomplish a given task is determined by how much or how little the rest of the company is willing to do. It is a rare church whose members all put their shoulder to the wheel.

Matt Redman ~ Devotion on Mercy

It’s the difference between life & death, between inescapable chains & eternal freedom.  It’s where love & justice kiss, & holiness & mercy meet.

Phillip Yancey ~ What’s So Amazing About Grace

The original followers of Jesus watched their beloved Jerusalem burn to the ground, & I’m sure they looked back thru tears as they moved on to Rome & Spain & Ethiopia.

CS Lewis ~ The Weight of Glory

…we are on the outside of the world, the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness & purity of morning, but they don’t make us fresh & pure. We can’t mingle with the splendors we see. But all the leaves of the New Testament are rustling with the rumor that it will not always be so. Some day, God willing, we shall get in.

Audrey Hepburn

The beauty of a woman isn’t in a facial mode, but is reflected in her soul.

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

All the wonder of God happens above our formula.  The more I climb outside my pat answers, the more invigorating the view – & the more my heart enters into worship.

“…but in your hearts revere Christ as Lord.  Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. ~ 1 Peter 3:15

A Year with Aslan from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

As the ship is sailing along at a pretty good clip, the crew notices there’s no wind driving them forward…

Edmund mentions to Caspian they might be about to fall off the edge of the world, & while that freaks a lot of them out – not Reepicheep.  & when Drianian asks what Reep thinks they’ll find at the bottom, he says …

Aslan’s country perhaps.  Or perhaps there isn’t any bottom.  Perhaps it goes down for ever & ever.  But whatever it is, won’t it be worth anything to just have looked for one moment beyond the edge of the world.

The lesson for us is to not wring our hands when times are hard, but rather rend our hearts – & enjoy the ride.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

When we place our life in his hands, it has a transforming impact on us – & sometimes in ways you might not even expect.

Colossians 3:14 say ..

Put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

We read that & automatically think of the church, but our awareness of his love can bring such a oneness of purpose, it can even impact your workout.  That new resolve can mean eating better, exercising smarter, & at the same time giving you joy, security & strength inside & out.

Today’s One Thing is instead of picking up new shoes or shorts, trying putting on love for your next workout.

A.W. Tozer ~ God Tells the Man Who Cares

To escape the snare of [being artificial] it is necessary that a man enjoy satisfying personal experience with God.  He must be totally committed to Christ, & delivered from the fear of man. He must make God responsible for the consequences .. then people will know they’re hearing a voice instead of a mere echo.

Matt Redman ~ Facedown

Creation is alive with musicality.  & every sound, note, & strain is a response to the divine.

Oswald Chambers ~ Love of God

The more the marble wears, the better the image grows. God enlarges us on the inside .. & every bit of nervous energy spent by us in God’s work means [more] spiritual insight.  If you’re right with God, he says, the very thing that is an affliction to you is working out an eternal weight of glory.

Phillip Yancey ~ What’s So Amazing About Grace?

You don’t need a shovelful of salt to preserve a slab of ham; a dusting will suffice.

David Platt ~ Radical

We say things like “The safest place to be is in the center of God’s will.”  We think “If it’s dangerous, God must not be in it.  If it’s risky or unsafe, it must not be God’s will.” But what if the center of God’s will is unsafe?  Jesus told his disciples “I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves” .. in other words “I’m sending you to dangerous places, where you’ll find yourself in the middle of evil, vicious people.  This is what it means to be by disciple.

Brennan Manning ~ The Ragamuffin Gospel

In conversation, the disciple who is truly poor in spirit always leaves the other person feeling “My life has been enriched by talking with you.” He’s not all exhaust & no intake.  He listens well…Her spiritual poverty enables her to enter the world of the other, even when she can’t identify with that world.

Francis Chan ~ Joy of Being A DiscipleMaker

God put his Holy Spirit inside of us. We’re temples of the living God, & we can’t walk around with this lack of joy.  He wants us blown away by his truth .. to see someone dead in their sins come alive when God’s Spirit enters.

David Roper ~ A Heart of Wisdom

Death meets us everywhere & any night could be the World’s Last Night, at least for me. That’s why it’s so important to invest our time wisely, & the best way to start, he says, is pray. Be clear minded & self-controlled so that you can pray.  It’s not so much that prayer moves God, but that it moves me.  Without it, I will accomplish exactly nothing.

Oscar Hammerstein (in a letter to Mary Martin)

A bell’s not a bell till you ring it.  A song’s not a song till you sing it.  Love in your heart isn’t put there to stay.  Love isn’t love till you give it away.

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. ~ Psalm 127:1

A Year with Aslan from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Have you ever met someone & hit it off right away?

As Lucy is on the ship, she’s watching a school of fish swim around, when suddenly she sees a little Sea Girl, about her age, right in the middle of them. Just when she thought she’d lose her, the girl looked up .. & it says ..

Lucy will never forget her face.  It didn’t look frightened or angry.  In that one moment they had somehow become friends.  & while it doesn’t seem there’s much chance of their meeting again, if they do – they’ll rush together with their hands held out.

What a beautiful picture of what heaven must be like.  You & others you’ve met, if only thru prayer, with eternity to get to know each other.

Daily Walk Devotion ~ Intentional Living Center

Happy Labor Day Weekend!  1 Corinthians 4:12 says:

We work hard with our own hands.  When we’re cursed, we bless.

Isn’t that perfect to celebrate Labor Day? If we want to live our faith out before others, we’re going to run into people that will criticize & make fun of us.  How we respond may or may not have an impact on them – but it wil definitely have a profound impact on us.

Continue to work with diligence, & when you’re treated badly – do something good for them.

Donald Miller ~ Blue Like Jazz

When we worship God, we worship a Being our life experience does not give us the tools to understand.  If we could, God would not inspire awe.

What the caterpillar calls the end, God calls a butterfly.

Oswald Chambers ~ My Utmost for His Highest

Our Lord must be repeatedly astounded at how un-simple we are. It is our own opinions that make us stupid. The mystery of God is not in what is going to be, it is now; we look for it in some cataclysmic event. When Philip said “Show us the Father” he expected the revelation of a tremendous mystery, not the One Whom he knew.  God never guides presently, but always now.

Phillip Yancey ~ What’s So Amazing About Grace?

Christians may choose to enter an arena of power, but when we do we dare not leave love behind.  The largest & deepest reference of the Gospel is not to the world or its social problems, but to Eternity & its social obligations.
