Stick-to-it-tive-ness is vital in our daily lives and in the music industry – Third Day has lived several very good examples of just that.
Mac Powell, lead singer and songwriter for Third Day, will be the first to tell you that staying with it has to be in your plans. Mac was the drum major in high school when he met and befriended Mark Lee. They started playing in church basements and youth events and added other members as they went along. In fact, Mac and Mark were playing at the same church as the Bullard Family Singers starring Tai Anderson and David Carr so there’s a piece of trivia for you!
Later, with more than 10 million albums sold, Tai Anderson remembers what it was like early on and was asked if anyone ever told them to get real jobs? “I don’t know if they put it quite like that. Sometimes people not showing up seemed to communicate that message. You know when we first started out, it wasn’t that there was this overwhelming… you know, it’s not like people were going crazy. I remember the first few years there was a lot of uncertainty if this was what we were going to get to do,” explained Tai. And when asked what the secret to their success is, Tai continued by saying “Mac’s beard! Over twenty years with the same facial hair!”
Facial hair aside, through the ups and downs of being in a band, guitarist Mark Lee at one point had decided to leave the band to achieve a fulltime college schedule. He never went through with quitting the band but Mark did go through with that college goal. Last year, he and Tai Anderson both graduated from Grand Canyon University Online.
Even with all of the brain power put together, when their last CD, Miracle, was missing that “right” song, Mac Powell had decided they just wouldn’t release it. That, was until a chance encounter had come along with a fan, that lead to a new song titled, “I Need A Miracle” to complete the project. Even the title “Miracle” comes from that elusive song. Just when they didn’t know where the song would come from, God provided.
If you ask Mac Powell today how they, after four Grammy awards, tons of Dove awards and nominations enough to wallpaper their houses, remain humble, he would simply say “We’re married!” Third Day is a great example of stick-to-it-tive-ness as our ability to take care of the small stuff while God takes care of the big stuff!
