Breaking Free from Lies

5 To-dos to Let God Heal Your Heart

If you’ve ever felt unworthy or imprisoned by the lies of your past, you don’t want to miss our conversation with renowned Christian artist and author, Tasha Layton. Join us as she shares her journey of clearing emotional clutter and embracing God’s love.

Together let’s examine the five things Tasha says you can do to break free from lies and let God heal your heart:

      1. Identify Lies You Believe About Yourself

Tasha Layton shares a powerful insight into her struggle with self-worth, rooted in the lies she believed since childhood. She began to ask herself some big questions.

“I think for me, the big hold up from experiencing the freedom of knowing the love of God – because I have read it my whole life in Scripture. I had people tell me how much God loved me. It was ingrained in my mind, but it wasn’t in my heart. And the thing that flipped for me was finding out, ‘Okay, what has caused my self-worth or value to deteriorate in my soul?  What are those things that have chipped away from my value over time?’ And they were all connected to the lies that I had believed even from childhood.”

You may find similar lies have chipped away at your own self-worth. Take a moment to reflect on what those lies might be and how they have impacted your life.

      2. Understand the Enemy’s Tactics

The enemy’s goal is to plant these lies in your heart to cause self-destruction. Tasha continues, “I went to this counseling place in Colorado thinking that I was going to deal with church hurt or a broken relationship or a plethora of things, and we ended up talking about childhood, and how the enemy gets his hook.”

Recognizing these schemes is crucial. 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (ESV).

Tasha explains, “He’s not powerful enough to take us out, but if he can get us to believe a lie, we’ll just self-destruct. So, he had gotten his hook into my heart at an early age with lies like, I’m not good enough. I’m not worth getting to know. I am rejected. [You can go down the list.] We each have our own list.”

Refuse to believe the lies of the enemy.

Understanding this can help you identify and combat the enemy’s tactics in your life.

     3. Clear Out the Junk

A significant step in Tasha’s journey was clearing out the emotional and spiritual junk that prevented her from experiencing God’s love fully.

She uses a vivid analogy: “I have this God shaped hole, this well that needs to be filled with the love of God. But I can’t pour anything in because there’s already junk in there. So, I had to get all the junk out.”

If you haven’t yet, consider your need to identify and remove the negative beliefs and emotional baggage that block God’s love from filling your heart.

     4. Fill the God-Shaped Hole

Once the junk is cleared, it’s time to fill that space with God’s love.

“And then once I got the junk out,” Tasha shares, “I saw the enemy’s wiles, his plans, his tactics in my life. … For me, it was emptying that bucket of gunk so that it could be full of his love.

Allowing God’s love to fill this void is essential for true healing and fulfillment. Ephesians 3:19 encourages us to “know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (ESV).

     5. Let Go of Small Things

Tasha recognizes the need to let go of lesser things to receive greater blessings from God. She explains with the example of, “this monkey has peanuts in his hand in a jar, and he’s trying to pull the peanuts out, but his fist is too big to go through the hole. You have to let it go. As soon as you let it go, there’s a whole pile of peanuts over here.”

Often, you hold onto small things, thinking they are significant, but God has much greater plans for you. Trusting in His plan and surrendering these small concerns can open you up to His abundant blessings.

She wraps it up saying, “We go years trying to fill that space, that void in our lives. And yet, if we would surrender and live according to His guidelines, He would fill that [void] so well … God’s plans for us are so much greater than our wildest dreams, and He wants to fill our hearts more, and He knows what will fulfill it.”

Trusting and surrendering to God’s guidance leads to true fulfillment and joy.
