Colton Dixon on the Role of Family Support
Colton Dixon, an American singer-songwriter and musician, gained fame as a contestant on the eleventh season of “American Idol,” where he finished in the top seven. Known for his powerful voice and Christian rock style, he joined us for a conversation. In this segment he shares a story from his childhood and how his parents’ unwavering support has influenced the way he wants to raise his own children.
Growing up, Colton was passionate about baseball. “I loved it. I practiced all the time. I loved pitching; I just loved baseball. It’s what I wanted to do when I grew up,” he reminisces. His parents were always there, supporting him in every game and practice, nurturing his dreams with unwavering enthusiasm.
A Father’s Advice
As Colton’s interests began to shift towards music, he was initially hesitant about discussing it with his father. “I just remember having to sit him down and go, ‘Hey, Dad, I think I’m going to do the high school play. I’m going to start doing more music stuff than sports stuff,'” Colton recalls.
To his surprise, his father was incredibly supportive, saying, “I just ask that you treat it the same that you did baseball, work at it with the same work ethic.”
Dedication and hard work became a cornerstone of Colton’s approach to his career. When the opportunity to participate in “American Idol” came, his father’s advice remained the same: “Treat it like a job. That’s all I ask.”
The “American Idol” Leap
Colton’s decision to join “American Idol” required him to drop out of his classes at North Dakota State University. His parents’ consistent support made all the difference. “I’m really thankful that they supported me in that way,” Colton shares.
Unwavering encouragement allows us to pursue our dreams without fear of judgment or failure.
Passing the Torch
Now, as a father to his own daughters, Colton aims to provide the same level of support that he received. “That’s something that I always want to do for the girls,” he says.
He emphasizes his gratefulness to his parents for instilling the importance of going all in. “Whatever you do, like all in go all in. Give it your best shot. If it doesn’t work out, you’re not going to have any regrets. You’re going to say you did your best at it, and we can go from there.”
As Colton continues to pass these values on to his own children, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting our loved ones wholeheartedly in their pursuits.
