Believe and Live

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”

─ John 11:25-27 NLT

Martha was distraught in our verse today. Jesus had returned too late, in her opinion. Her brother, Lazurus was dead, buried and in her own words, “stinking” by now. Martha’s standing there, having a conversation with Jesus about whether or not she believed. She believed He was the Messiah. She believed her brother would be resurrected when they all went to heaven together. But Martha didn’t see the possibility that her dead and buried brother could be raised from the dead in this life, even though the miracle maker stood right in front of her.

There is the way of salvation – Jesus said, “Anyone who believes in me will live.” But the reality is that most people don’t ever understand those words – “Believe and live,” until God opens their eyes to see the truth, to experience the revelation.

“The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe[d] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name” (John 20:30-31 NLT).
