Erase Fear; Replace It with Trust

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

─ 2 Timothy 1:7

A team of parents were gathered in the fellowship hall to work on the set design for the upcoming Christmas production. With a pencil, Dean lightly sketched out a figure on a clean sheet of foam core board. He realized it wasn’t quite large enough. Frustrated, he began to aggressively erase it.

“Hey, take it easy on the board,” his friend, Michael coached.

He dropped the eraser and looked up. “It’s really not the sketch I’m frustrated with,” he admitted. “I wish I could erase all fear and replace it with trust.”

Michael looked a little surprised, so Dean continued, “I am a control freak and my family is losing patience with me. I’m realizing fear is the root of it.”

Michael nodded knowingly. “Yes, we all fear when we have a lack of trust. I really struggled with this when my daughter, Alia was born. But I’ve slowly learned to trust God to take care of my children. The more I am determined to trust God, the less I fear and am able to let go of my need to control.”

Dean smiled. “You make it sound so easy.”

“Well, it’s not easy. It’s a daily choice to let go and let God. You can do it with time in prayer and having someone, like me, to talk to about it,” Michael offered.
