Finding Focus with Mercy Me

You can remain focused on what is truly and eternally important instead of getting pulled into issues that are out of your control.

Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

—Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV

During the Covid pandemic, the Christian contemporary band, Mercy Me, chose to keep their focus on Christ rather than get sucked into the things that divide people. They saw that comments were “exploding on the internet.” People were arguing about everything and being harsh with one another.

The band members realized they needed to steer away from the arguments and keep their focus on the music and on the most important message, which is Jesus. They stayed firmly focused on their goal, and, as Mike Scheuchzer explained, it is the “common thread” that kept them together. His hope is that the global church can remember that all the other issues “play second fiddle to Christ.” He is where you find rest. He is your hope, and it is His Good News that must be shared.

In order to fix your eyes on Christ, you must take them off whatever has caught your attention.

How are you choosing to fix your eyes on Jesus? Nothing that is happening around you is a surprise to Him. He provides hope, peace and rest in a discouraging and restless world.

It takes discipline to focus on Christ with so many distractions, but if you ask, He will help you. The more you walk away from heated and divisive arguments, whether in person or online, the easier it will be to stay focused where your hope is. That is where you will find peace.
