Freely Give Yourself Away
Since by your obedience to the Truth through the [Holy] Spirit you have purified your hearts for the sincere affection of the brethren, [see that you] love one another fervently from a pure heart.
─ 1 Peter 1:22 AMPC
Freely Give Yourself Away
Selfless giving is a genuine sign of love. A self-centered person can’t truly love because their love comes with strings attached. If you love me, then I’ll do this or that ….
Peter shares with us in our verses today that only through God’s love and forgiveness can you truly be free to take your eyes off yourself, your worries, cares, wants and needs – and look to meet the needs of others.
Jesus’ willingness to give Himself away by trading His own life for yours, demonstrated deeply heartfelt, unconditional love. He loves you. And now you can love others by following His example and giving yourself sacrificially.
Real love produces tangible actions. Others experience the love of God as you:
- Show kindness to strangers.
- Sympathize with those who have been mistreated.
- Keep the promises you make.
- Honor your marriage vows.
- Live content with what you have.
Today’s One Thing
As you were reading today’s devotional, who came to your mind that you could show sincere love to by an act of kindness, an encouraging word, or spending time in prayer for them? Take time now to express that kindness in whatever way you imagined. If you need a few ideas: send a text saying you prayed for them, write an email expressing encouragement or call them and just tell them thank you for whatever they have meant to you as a friend or coworker.
