Giving Intentions

Every person has a different reason for why they give and what they give. How they choose to give their words, time, energy, affection or money flows out of the motives and intentions of their heart.

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
─ Luke 6:38 NLT

Three people volunteer at a children’s hospital.
One volunteers because of the great care his child received when she was born and during the months, she spent in the neonatal intensive care unit; he wants to give back.
Another volunteers because the hospital is close to her house, and she lives alone. She’s looking for friendship.
And finally, other volunteers simply because someone asked her to do so; and it gives her a sense of belonging.

When you repeatedly choose to do what pleases Christ, you will receive blessings.

Jesus said when you give, you will receive your gift returned to you, plus more! When you give in obedience to Him, He multiplies it, and when it comes back around to you, it is more than what you originally gave in some fashion.

This works both ways. If you are judgmental, you’ll receive judgement. If you are compassionate, you will receive compassion. If you are merciful, then others will show you mercy. If we respond to others with kindness, we’ll experience the kindness of others.

That’s not to say everyone you give good gifts will receive them and respond in kind. But when you repeatedly choose to do what pleases Christ, you will receive blessings from His hand.

Today’s One Thing

What do you choose to give daily? Examine your motives and then ask God to give you the opportunity to give good gifts to others this week. Watch for opportunities and intentionally respond in a way that you know pleases Christ.
