Hold Tight to the Blessings

Allen and Chrystal sat quietly, waiting for the funeral to begin. Like many in the room, they struggled to understand how someone so young and healthy – just 39 years old – could succumb to death in just a few short weeks. It made no sense, and yet there they sat, grieving for their close friend who had lost his daughter. But moments into the service, a friend shared how she always joked saying, “I won’t live past 40 anyway!”

Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
─ Proverbs 13:3 ESV

Sometimes people say things they think are funny but are contrary to God’s Word or God’s will for their life. In the case of Allen and Chrystal, they were shocked to find that their friend’s daughter often spoke in jest about not living a long life.

Hold fast to the blessings of God with the words you say!

The wisdom of God in our verse today encourages you to watch what you say. The positive words you speak in agreement with Scripture puts faith to work on your behalf. It activates the blessings of God in your life.

The reality is, what God has for you can’t be taken from you, unless you choose to give it up. That can be done unintentionally when you open your lips and speak contrary to God’s will (Proverbs 18:21). It gives opportunity to the devil to create chaos in your life (Ephesians 4:27-29). Instead, hold fast to the blessings of God with the words you say!

Today’s One Thing

Think about the words you say. Have you said things that are contrary to God’s Word? If so, ask:

  • God to forgive you.
  • For Him to remove the power of those words in your life.
  • The Holy Spirit to help you stop using negative words.
  • And for Him to bring Scripture to mind that are words of blessing.
