Honor God with His Intentions for Money

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

─ 1 Timothy 6:10-11

The Bible talks a lot about money. It’s not money itself, but the love of money that leads to pain. When we become greedy or develop an obsession with money, which is easy to do in our western culture, that creates a spiritual dynamic and brings us down.

We can experience anxiety, worry or fear about money to the point it becomes all-consuming and detracts us from growing spiritually. That’s why it’s important to recognize God’s intention for our money. Scripture encourages us to work hard, to be smart stewards of all God gives us, knowing that it’s not ours, but God’s. As money comes into our hands, and we have these resources flowing through our hands, it is an opportunity to be generous and to honor God with His intention.

As we think of God’s intentions for our money, we can set goals to get out of debt, give more generously and invest in our future. A key to that is to spend less than we make. As we do so for an extended period of time, we learn to live on a smaller amount and then take that difference and use it to advance kingdom work.

Today’s One Thing

Consider how you can honor God with the resources He’s given you. Ask Him what changes He’d have you make today.
