Hope in His Word for You

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

─ Isaiah 43:2

Patty couldn’t count the number of times someone asked her how she dealt with the fear of being home while her husband Zach was out fighting fires. After 20 years you’d think she’d be used to it, but she wasn’t.

As she told the inquirers many times, “I pray the 91st Psalm often. I give it to God and try not to let it get into my head.” But tonight, she had a little trouble. There was a big fire across her rural community. Several families had already lost their homes, barns and livestock as the fire crossed county lines and highways, refusing to give up the fight against the firefighters.

On top of the relentless flames, social media posts in their local community had gotten out of hand. A story about a critically injured fireman who had gotten too close to a burning barn was being shared. Patty knew – it was probably speculation since the scanner had been quiet all night.

She tossed and turned and prayed. She finally got up and opened her Bible to a scripture that usually comforted her in times like these – Isaiah 43:2. She read and re-read the words out loud: “When Zach walks through fire he shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume him.”

A little after 3 a.m., Zach called. “Figured you were up because of all the social media chatter about this fire,” he said. “I’m fine. One of the guys from another station fell through some steps as we were clearing a barn. But he’s okay. We finally have the fire under control.”
