Hope to Push Back the Darkness

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

─ Psalm 46:5

Tricia sat in the surgery waiting room with her new daughter-in-law, Gemma. The newlyweds had only been home from their honeymoon a few weeks. Now, her son, Ricky, lay on the operating table. The doctors offered little hope following the motorcycle wreck he had late yesterday evening on his way home from work.

As the hours ticked by with no word from the doctors, Tricia tried to keep her breathing steady. It was hard not to hold her breath. Most of their family and friends had come and sat with them past midnight. She had already cried, prayed and walked the floor reciting God’s promises.

She could see the morning sun barely peeking over the horizon. Morning was coming. She imagined God pushing back the darkness of this horrible night. Hope began to rise. Promises from the One who gives life flooded her heart.

Suddenly, the surgeon appeared. “He made it through the surgery,” he said. “Ricky’s recovery will be very slow at first, but we expect a complete recovery.”

God’s life is the light that shines through the darkness—and the darkness can never extinguish it.
