Humility to Learn and Grow
How do you like stepping into something new? Does it make you feel unsure or uncertain? Something new could include a new job, leadership position, or even a fresh stage in your family life. Regardless, “new” can stretch you in ways you never expected.
Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
– 1 Corinthians 10:24 ESV
It’s tempting to prove yourself by demonstrating your value, to act as if you’ve got it all figured out. But God calls you to something better—humility. Not the kind that shrinks back in fear, but the kind that trusts Him enough so you can listen, learn, and grow.
When you choose humility, your focus shifts from what you think you know to what God wants to tell you. In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul tells us to consider others more significant than ourselves, to look beyond our interests, and to learn from those around us. Humility positions you to receive wisdom rather than resist it.
Humility is a step toward listening to God.
Growth happens when you release the pressure to be the expert and embrace the posture of a student. God places people in your life—mentors, coworkers, family members—who can shape you if you listen. Seeking the good of others means being observant and paying attention to those who have walked the path before you, asking questions, and valuing the experience of others instead of only leaning on your perspective.
Moses didn’t step into leadership fully ready. He relied on God’s wisdom (even during the difficult times), listened to his father-in-law’s counsel, and learned daily through experiences.
Jesus, though fully God, demonstrated humility as He served, listened, and obeyed the Father’s will.
If the Son of God showed the importance of humility, how much more should we?
You don’t have to step into something new with uncertainty, anxiety, or fear; just a heart willing to walk in humility, trust God, and learn. Are you ready for God to lean into your teachable spirit?
Today’s One Thing
Give thanks to God for allowing you new opportunities, and declare, “I choose humility as I step into new roles, trusting God to guide me. I will listen, learn, and grow.”
