Invite Your Family to Dream Together

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

─ Psalm 133:1-3 NIV

Invite Your Family to Dream Together

Dream together as a family. It’s encouraging and offers a future when you stop and think about “what could be” as a family. It’s an invitation to ….

Look beyond your own wants and needs, get a bigger view of what God is doing in the world, and then see how your family fits in. Figure out what pleases Christ and do it (Ephesians 5:10 MSG). Ask the kids what they would like to accomplish with the family before they leave home. You might be surprised at the answers you get.

Speak into the lives of each family member. When you look at the Old Testament, you often read of a father passing on a blessing to the oldest son. It was common in the culture then – and is a great idea for today. When you do this, you’re offering hope to your children.

  • Point out the area of giftedness you see in your spouse and children.
  • Proclaim how God could use that in their lives.
  • Say things that you sense, or are aware of, specifically about them that you know would encourage them.

You position yourself to do this by getting to know more about your loved ones. This means learning what it is that motivates and uplifts each person, while at the same time understanding what will discourage or upset them. These factors will be uniquely different for each member of your family.

Today’s One Thing

Start a new habit of asking your family members, individually and together as a family, to share their dreams with one another. Maybe start during dinner this evening.
