Keeping Promises – Big and Small

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

─ Numbers 23:19 NAS

Heidi’s childhood memories dripped with disappointment, discouragement and unfulfilled promises. Her father made big promises but seldom followed through. She remembered many times he’d forgotten her. She’d sit on the steps outside the school building waiting for his truck that never came.

When she met her husband, Dave, they had many conversations about her challenges to trust others, even God, because of her father’s inability to keep his promises. Slowly, Heidi learned she could trust Dave to do everything in his power to deliver whatever he promised.

One Saturday morning as they climbed out of bed after a late night with their baby, their three-year-old bounded into the bedroom, “Daddy,” she overhead her son say, “it’s Saturday, it’s playground day!”

Dave rolled his eyes at Heidi, remembering his words from earlier in the week. “Yes,” he replied to his son, “we are going to the playground today, but not until after we all get some breakfast.”

Heidi gave Dave a big hug. “Thank you,” she said quietly. Dave’s faithfulness had restored her faith in God, and in others. She was sure her children would know what it means to trust their fathers – Dave and God!

Our world needs the hope we have knowing we can always trust God!
