King and Advocate

For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver;the Lord is our king; he will save us.

— Isaiah 33:22

Facebook is filled with innovative ways of doing familiar tasks. Need a new way to fold fitted sheets, clean your silver or use up the leftovers in your fridge? Social media can help. We’ve even invented a word for these helps—life hacks. We try to do something one way, realize it doesn’t work, so we invent a new way.

This is human nature. We keep trying new things, especially if we don’t like the results we got before. This was certainly true of Israel, who had Moses as a lawgiver, then the judges to guide them and implement the law. Finally, they demanded a king—and the Lord gave them Saul. They were never happy with what they had.

The prophet Isaiah set out to remind them that the Lord was all Israel ever needed. God was their judge and lawgiver and king. And more than that—He saved them. And He saves us still.

It can be easy to miss the work that God is doing and become dependent on the rulers we can see, no matter how flawed they are. But human rulers are always fallible. They can betray us and lead us astray. Even the best ones are not as wise and loving as our true King. It is when we learn to always turn to Him and follow His guidance, that we will be saved.
