Know that God Speaks to You

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

-Romans 10:17 ESV

Many struggle to know if God is truly speaking to them. While most don’t hear God in an audible voice, many hear Him from deep within their soul. Some struggle to know if the voice is their own thoughts, or if the words spoken are from God the Father.

Just a child, Samuel heard the voice of God referenced in our verse above. We don’t know if the voice was audible or from within him, but he discerned the voice belonged to Eli, the priest, which was a very familiar voice in his life.

God spoke the world into existence and created all of humankind for relationship with Him. From the foundations of the world, He planned to have conversations with us. In the New Testament, Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear,” 15 different times.

Here are 4 ways to be sure you’re hearing God’s voice:

  1. Does it agree with God’s Word? God will never tell you to do, think or say anything that goes against His Word. If you have a thought and aren’t sure if it’s God speaking, look it up in the Bible and settle that right away. Psalm 138:2
  2. Words from God bring abundant life.  Everything He instructs you to do is designed to bring blessing grace to you. John 10:10
  3. God teaches you to recognize His voice through His written Word. Isaiah 53:5
  4. Build your confidence to hear from Him, drawing near to God by spending time in His Word and in prayer. James 4:8

God will speak to you in a voice that is familiar. No matter how dark the night, He’ll give you what He knows you need to make it through ‘til the morning.
