Like a Tree Always Green

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.

— Jeremiah 17:7-8

Gail loved fishing with her grandfather. A broad creek bordered his farm, and he kept trotlines stretched across the water. They would take his boat as he checked the lines, observing the abundant life of the creek: the turtles, frogs, snakes and birds overhead. Gail loved the trees and thick plants along the banks.

Her grandfather showed her how the tree roots ran along the bank, to take advantage of the water, even during dry periods. He pointed out how the dense foliage helped keep the soil moist, offering protection for the animals during the dry heat of summer. “God takes care of them,” he said. “Just like He takes care of us.”

God does indeed take care of us, and when we trust in Him, we’ll flourish. Like those trees and plants on that creek bank, God is the source of protection and nourishment when the world around us feels barren and distant. People may be unreliable; they may betray or turn away from us. But God never does. Because of Him our future is certain, no matter what the world tosses our way. He is the source of our hope and our strength, and we can rely on Him.

Today’s One Thing

Find a picture of a stream and keep it handy on your phone or computer for a few days. Let it be a reminder of God’s everlasting provision and protection.
