Listening for God Whispers

Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth.  He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God.”

– Psalm 46:8-10 ESV

Listening for God Whispers

The sound of waves crashing against the boulders along the coastal shore can overwhelm you. The waters’ voice thunders, overstepping every sound for miles. Any other noise falls silent. It’s difficult to hear a whisper in your ear.

Our world seems to grow louder each day as people fight for their cause, and vehemently try to bring others around to make them see things their way. Sadly, it’s even come to heated discussions and violent uncivilized demonstrations including physical destruction.

Jesus experienced unruly crowds and opposition. John 5:15-17 says, “The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I am working.’”

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were angry because Jesus had broken one of their rules. A man who hadn’t walked in 38 years experienced the miraculous. Instead of celebrating with him, they dismissed the miracle and turned their hearts against Jesus because the rule was more important than the no longer broken human being. They completely missed the point because they were consumed with the rules.

Don’t let the rules around you distract you from what God is doing for you. When you spend time with God, He helps you to shut off the outside noise, so you can listen intently to His voice on the inside of you and see what He is doing for you.

Today’s One Thing

Get quiet with God today and listen to hear what He is saying.

  • Picture the tenderness of His love for you crashing powerfully against the breakers of your soul.
  • Turn your ear to the inside.
  • Let the Spirit of God speak to the deep places of your heart.
