Our Portion – Meeting Our Spiritual Needs
“‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’”
─ Lamentations 3:24
On average, most humans can’t go three minutes without oxygen, three days without water, or three weeks without food. Sunlight is also vital, providing vitamin D, energy, heat and even a source of emotional inspiration.
Just as God, our Creator, provided for our basic physical needs to be met, He also made a way for our spirits to thrive. He gave us everything necessary to flourish spiritually. Jesus is our breath, living water, bread of life and the light of the world.
- God breathed His breath – His own source of life – into Adam’s lifeless body, and at that moment, humankind became a living soul (Genesis 2:7). Man became a spiritual being, unlike any other creature on the earth.
- Jesus referenced the term living water to indicate eternal life (John 4:10). He referenced the Holy Spirit as the living water, flowing out of a heart of a believer, giving them eternal hope and life (John 7:37–39).
- Through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the soul of the believer is nourished just like bread provides sustenance to the physical body (John 6:35).
- As the light of the world, Jesus is a beacon of hope shining God’s presence, protection and guidance into the heart of everyone who will follows Him (John 8:12).
We are positioned to thrive spiritually! There is hope in knowing the Lord is our portion and supplying our needs.
