Parenting through Adoption

Through adoption you become a parent of another who can flourish in your love and care.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

– 1 John 3:1 ESV

Adoption is one of the beautiful forms of parenthood. In willingly choosing another to love and care for as your own, you become a mother or father. It is committing to get to know who is underneath the exterior of a child, or fur baby, in need of acceptance and love.

Adoption can take on many forms from a newborn baby or a puppy, to an older child, dog, or cat. You take on the great responsibility and joy of parenting. Adoption can also look like the mentoring relationship between an older person and someone younger, as in a youth group leader who considers the youth just like their own, or an older person who purposely spends time with a younger one to encourage them in their role, their job, and in their faith.

God guides you as you seek to honor Him in your nurturing of another.

Just as God planned ahead of time to adopt you into His great and glorious family through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5), if you adopt, you are choosing to love and cherish another. In Christ you became a part of the kingdom of God and an heir to His great riches, just as an adopted member becomes a part of the family and all that belongs to that family.

There are many ways to be a parent, and God, your perfect heavenly Father, guides you as you seek to honor Him in your nurturing of another.

Today’s One Thing

A prayer you can pray: “Father, is there another you would have me nurture? Someone I can share Your great love with? Point me in the direction I need to go to pursue what You have put on my heart. I trust You and Your direction. Amen.”
