Pursue Optimism and Purpose

Do you remember the story The Little Engine that Could? “Puff, puff, chug, chug went the Little Blue Engine. I think I can – I think I can – I think I can …” Yes, the Little Engine pursued a new opportunity, made it over the mountain and helped deliver the toys to the children. The story was written as a children’s philosophy promoting optimism and never giving up.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
─ Philippians 4:8 NKJV

In the story mentioned above, the toys’ first train engine struggled to pull the heavy load, and the toys were rejected by three other trains when they asked for help. While this isn’t a biblical story or reference, it provides insight into life’s challenges and human nature. The three capable trains that refused to help didn’t give it a second thought in their right to refuse to assist and went on their merry way.

Perhaps you’ve encountered similar people whose actions seemed indignant or at least unhelpful as they scurried on their way. Instead of concentrating on why other people’s perspectives do not align with yours or developing a bitterness toward those who chose not to help, Paul encourages you to think about what is right and praiseworthy. He did not encourage you to worry or create fabricated thoughts. Instead, he conveys the Lord’s message by giving you this pure instruction for your benefit.

Concentrate on what is lovely, admirable, noble and excellent as you receive your guidance and energy from the Lord.

The Lord has given you the freedom and power to speak life authoritatively to all situations in your life. The truth is God is the Alpha and Omega, and for those who have accepted His Son as Savior, they are His children. He desires you to think optimistically and pursue living on purpose enthusiastically.

When you live on purpose to fulfill your purpose, the Lord will give you the proper perspective to be strong and courageous as you journey.
