Put the Pause into Practice

Do you ever feel like the world constantly pushes you to do things quicker, add more to your plate, with an unspoken mandate to never catch your breath? While our culture seems to thrive on urgency and quick decisions, God calls us to pause.

Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, And he sins who hastens with his feet.
– Proverbs 19:2 NKJV

Pausing before acting, especially before a big decision, is one of the wisest choices you can make. It creates space for God to enter the conversation, guiding our thoughts and actions with His infinite wisdom.

When you pause, you invite God’s wisdom into your decisions and find rest in His strength.

Our verse today reminds us that haste often leads to missteps. The Bible shows us many examples of individuals who paused to seek God before acting. Consider Nehemiah. When he heard about Jerusalem’s ruined walls, he didn’t rush into action. Instead, he wept, fasted, and prayed for days (Nehemiah 1:4). Through that pause, God gave him a plan and the strength to execute it, even against great opposition.

When you put the pause into practice, you no longer respond from impulse or fear, but give God room to provide clarity. When you slow down, you trade your limited perspective for God’s greater view.

When you invite Him in, you’ll discover rest—not from inactivity, but from anxiety and striving. Your pause becomes an act of trust, acknowledging that you don’t have all the answers and signals your desire for God to direct you.

Today’s One Thing
This week, practice pausing intentionally. Before making decisions—big or small—take a moment to pray. Ask God, “What do You want me to see in this situation?” Write down any thoughts or verses that come to mind. Trust that He will guide you in His timing.
