Rescue the Poor

Do justice to the weak (poor) and fatherless; maintain the rights of the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy; rescue them out of the hand of the wicked.

─ Psalm 82:3-4 AMPC

Rescue the Poor

With just under 200 verses that talk about the poor, it seems God is concerned with those who are without the essential means to live a quality life. Many of those verses emphasize God’s desire for us to treat them well and care for them, including our verses today.

How we treat the poor isn’t just about taking care of them, but it is also about us, those who have the ability to make a difference in their lives. How we respond speaks to our character and how we imitate God’s nature.

Sadly, those with affluence are treated well because those interacting with them often hope to get something from them. And sadly, the poor are often left helpless and defenseless because in the eyes of society, they don’t contribute in a positive way.

As Christ followers, we should give without thought of gain. God willingly gave his only Son to us who were once poor in spirit, that we may become rich in the blessings of God.

Today’s One Thing

Give thanks to God today for His willingness to rescue you from spiritual poverty. Ask him how you can best serve him by giving to the poor today.
