Rewriting the Lies

Sometimes, the wounds you carry from your past speak louder than the truth. “You’re not enough.” “You’ll always be broken.” Perhaps you’ve lived under those lies so long they feel like the truth. But they’re not.

Provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
– Isaiah 61:3 NIV

Tasha Layton, singer and worship leader, was deeply hurt by a church leader and walked away from faith, seeking answers in other religions. Her journey led to a dark valley of depression and even a suicide attempt. But God met her in that low place and began showing her the truth. “God has always been pursuing me… I don’t have to work it up or try to reach Him or be good enough or earn His favor,” she said.

Still, even after coming back to faith, something lingered—those early lies. Healing didn’t fully come until she began asking God to revisit her wounds with her. “Jesus, where were You? What do You want to say to me now?” she prayed. And in those moments, God spoke truth into her pain.

“The enemy likes to get a hook in early… And when we let (Jesus) speak into those places in our lives, not just through Scripture either, like really hearing Him, being still and knowing that He’s God—when He speaks, it does dispel the lie. It does crush that negative message that we speak over ourselves.”

The wounds of your past may have shaped you, but they do not define you—God’s truth has the final word over your life.

You can ask the same questions. Where was Jesus when you were hurt? When you felt abandoned, overlooked, or unwanted? He was there. He didn’t cause your pain, but He never left you. He was weeping with you, holding you, waiting to redeem your story.

God’s truth has the power to rewrite the narrative you’ve believed. When He speaks, the lies lose their grip.

Your past does not define you. The words spoken over you in pain do not hold the final say. You are who God says you are—loved, chosen, and free. Let Him speak. Let Him rewrite the lies.

Today’s One Thing
Pause and pray: “Jesus, show me where You were in my pain. Reveal the lies I’ve believed. Speak Your truth over me. Rewrite my story with Your love.”
