Safe and Secure

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

─ Proverbs 18:10 ESV

Elisabeth Elliot asked, “Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your savior, your guide? If He is, you don’t need to search any further for security.”

If you knew Elisabeth’s story, you might find this statement surprising, coming from her. She went to Ecuador to serve as a missionary to the Quichua Indians, and a year later, Jim, a man she’d met while they were both at Wheaton College, joined her. They married in 1953 and continued working together. Jim had a strong desire to minister to the unreached tribe.

His dream was short lived. After successfully meeting three members of the Acuas who showed themselves friendly, a fierce group whom no one had met without being killed by them, Jim and four other missionaries entered Aucas territory and were speared to death.

Their daughter, Valerie, was just an infant when her father was killed. Yet Elisabeth stayed in Ecuador and continued to minister to the Quichua Indians. Through a series of events that could only be orchestrated by God, Elisabeth met two Aucas women, and they lived with her for a year. The relationship with those two opened the door for Elisabeth and her daughter to go in and live with the tribe that had killed her husband. She stayed with them and ministered to them for two years. In 1963, she and her daughter returned safely to the United States.

God promises you security. When you’re tempted to fear, run to Him. You’re safe and secure in His presence. You are strengthened to walk out His plans for your life, without fear, knowing that He will not only protect you but provide access and favor throughout your endeavors.

Today’s One Thing

Encourage yourself in the Lord’s provision of security today by reading Psalm 91 aloud.

Take note of the scripture that you can lean on when you may forget the security that God provides:

  • Strong shelter
  • Refuge and strength
  • He is faithful
  • The lord is our dwelling place
  • He will cover us
  • He will deliver us
  • He is our shield

Jot these scriptures down in your journal or a sticky note in your home. Look to them as reminders that we serve a God that is so mighty but still loves us so much that He will protect and fight for us!
