Seasoned Speech

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

─ Colossians 4:6 ESV

Seasoned Speech

Pete sat quietly, but he imagined steam rolling up out of the top of the head. He knew his face was flushed and his ears were red with anger. He fought to keep his composure. Since coming to Christ, he had worked hard not to let his temper get the best of him, even though he wasn’t always successful. Lord, help me to respond and not react, he prayed inside his head. Let my words be grace-filled.

Today’s verse calls for wisdom, expressing God’s desire for you to respond in love. Salt brings out the flavor in whatever dish it is added to. Your speech, seasoned with the salt of God’s wisdom, grace and mercy, speaks to the heart of the individual in a way that they best understand your heart and God.

If you respond according to our verse today, God may use you or the words you say to open the door of someone’s heart. Either way, your words matter and reflect on your character and God’s.

Today’s One Thing

Make today’s verse your prayer today. Pray it several times throughout the day, inviting God to help you with each conversation you have.
