See the Big Picture

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.
─ Romans 12:16 ESV

Abraham and Lot’s herdsmen chose conflict. They bickered and fought over petty things instead of uniting against their neighboring enemies (Genesis 13:7-8). Likewise, many Christians today oppose one another while the real enemy, Satan is at work. They are distracted by petty, little things and can miss the big picture.

Romans 12:16 reminds us to live in harmony with each other. Haughty behavior pushes others away from you (and God) and is unbecoming of a child of God.

Unity compels others to desire to experience God.

Destructive conflicts among Christians can:

  • Damage goodwill.
  • Hamper progress toward important goals.
  • Force us to become self-centered instead of love centered.

Jesus saw the big picture. He recognized the destruction and pain caused when arguments and disagreements occurred within the family of God. His final prayer, right before He was betrayed, was for all of his followers – including you – to be united.

Jesus said, “I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.” (John 17:21 CEV).

Today’s One Thing

The next time you feel compelled to stand up for what’s right, pause for a few moments and ask God if this is really where you should be focused. Then follow the leading of the Holy Spirit as He guides you to bring pleasure to the Father through your words and actions.
