Seek Wise Counsel
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm, but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure.
─ Proverbs 11:14-15
Jamison tried to arrange his thoughts in his mind as he headed home. The news he received unexpectedly at work weighed heavily on his mind. He wasn’t sure how to break the news to his wife, Sandra, who was expecting their first son any day.
When he walked into the house, she was seated at the kitchen table with a cup of hot tea. “You’re home early,” she noted. “How was your day?”
“I’m home early,” he replied, “because my position will be eliminated over the next few weeks. But, I have options,” he added quickly. “They’ve presented me with two job opportunities within the company – they are different types of positions. One requires extensive training – and time away from home for that training, which would take me away from you and the baby. The other would require a move about 500 miles away.”
Sandra took a long sip of her tea and smiled. “I know there’s been times when it seemed difficult to discern which way to go. God encourages us to seek wise counsel. I’m thankful God’s given us some amazing mentors who will pray with us and give us words of wisdom.”
“You’re right!” Jamison said, kissing her. “I’ll make a couple of phone calls tonight. We have a week or so to decide which way to go.”
Every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow. If we are seeking out God’s plan, then we desire to seek wise counsel.
