Stepping Out of the Boat

Imagine the scene: the disciples, especially Peter, have just experienced the feeding of the five thousand, and Jesus tells them to get in their boat and go to the other side. Later that same night, at approximately 4 a.m., the winds and waves were turbulent. Then, they see a figure walking toward them and speaking to them. What did they do?

Life often presents moments when staying where you are feels safer than stepping into the unknown. The waves may be crashing, and the wind may howl, but deep in your heart, you sense Jesus is calling you to trust Him.

He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
– Matthew 14:29 ESV

Faith often resembles Peter’s example—a willingness to take the first step, even when the next one is unclear. You may not know how everything will turn out, but when you trust Jesus, you’re placing your confidence in Him.

Think about your own “boat.” Maybe it’s a comfortable job, a predictable routine, or even a mindset that’s kept you anchored. Jesus isn’t asking you to step out recklessly but to trust Him when He says, “Come.” He sees the waves and feels the wind, yet He calls you because He knows the peace and strength you have when walking with Him.

True faith begins with a single step toward Jesus.

Stepping out in faith means trusting and focusing on Jesus. When Peter shifted his focus to the wind and waves, the obstacles replaced the focus on Jesus.  How often do you do the same? You start strong, but then doubts creep in: What if I fail? What if ….? Yet, like Peter, you can call out, “Lord, save me,” and His hand will always be there, pulling you back up.

Faith doesn’t mean you’ll never hesitate. It means trusting that Jesus is greater than the storm. Every step toward Him strengthens your reliance on His completeness and authority, not your own. You don’t have to figure it all out or have a perfect plan. You need to take the next step He’s calling you to take. Trust in Him, and He will carry you.

Today’s One Thing
Commit your ways to the Lord, and tell yourself, “I trust Jesus to guide me as I step out of my comfort zone. I will keep my eyes on Him, walk in faith, and seek His wisdom.”
