The Blessings of Hard Times

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
James 1:12

James knew, as did all the disciples, that becoming a Christian does not make life easier. In fact, sometimes our beliefs can make life more difficult. Hard times come to everyone, and remaining steadfast and trusting in God’s grace can test even the most devout.

Theologian Matthew Henry once compared the sun to God. The sun, which is ever bright, does not change. Its light shines steady, no matter what. It’s what comes between us and the sun that effects how we react to it. Clouds build up; storms occur. We struggle with mud and ice, and it makes us miserable because we can’t see the sun. Likewise, when calamities land on us, they can darken our view of God. Persevering in our faith is harder than the trials we’re going through.

We need to remember that God blesses those who endure. When we remain faithful and rely on His strength and His promises, we will be rewarded. God, who shines ever bright, will never forget us.
