The Scriptures Are Your Story

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

─ Hebrews 4:12 NASB

When you sit down to read the Bible, it’s important to see yourself in God’s Word. While it’s true you’re reading historical narratives that took place thousands of years ago, there’s so much more within the pages than historical accounts.

Hebrews 4:12 whispers a truth from God’s heart to yours – the Words written within the pages of this glorious book are alive, telling the story of who God is and who He created you to be. You must enter the Bible, no longer a spectator, but a participant.

The Bible is your story. See yourself in the lives of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Daniel, David, Deborah and Ruth. Are you the good Samaritan? The woman at the well? The leper or the blind man? What about Peter, Paul or even Jesus.

How would you respond if Jesus asked you the questions He asked the disciples? How would you respond if God came looking for you in the Garden like He did for Adam and Eve? Putting yourself into the Scripture by imagining yourself within the context, brings Scripture powerfully alive.

Today’s One Thing

As you read the Bible today, ask the Lord to help you look at it with new eyes and a new heart. Examine it like it is your story. Ask questions like there’s a message within the scripture– a revelation He has waiting for you. What is going on in this story? How does each person feel? Why? Do you identify with anyone? Why? This kind of observation and curiosity leads to understanding on how to apply scripture in our daily lives.
