Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

In some of the darkest moments of our lives, we find the light of God’s love and truth.

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
─ Hebrews 12:2 NKJV

A picture of 93-year-old Helen Lemmel at a piano, along with a short article, appeared in the Shreveport Journal, March 27, 1951. She wrote more than 500 hymns and poems, as well as a children’s book entitled “Story of the Bible.”

Helen’s life was not easy. Widowed with two children after her first husband died, she eventually remarried. Then her second husband left her when a disease took her eyesight. Her most renowned song, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, came out in 1922 and became prophetic in her own life. Helen remained faithful to Jesus until her death in 1961 at the age of 97.

When you turn your eyes upon Jesus, it helps bring clarity to your life.

In our verse today, it not only tells us to look to Jesus, but it also shares why:
He starts and finishes the race set before us.
He endured the cross so that He could set the example and go before us, demonstrating how to live a faith-filled life.

“Looking to Jesus” implies He should be your focus, without distraction, leaning into Him for everything you need.

Today’s One Thing

Today, intentionally set aside some time to look to Jesus. Silence your phone and set it down in another room. Get alone and really share your heart with Him. Then sit quietly, waiting in silence, listening for Him to bring His thoughts to your mind.
