Waiting

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

—Psalm 27:14

Life is filled with waiting. We have rooms specified for it and lines organized to sustain it. We wait for job offers and phone calls and the birth of children. We count down the days until vacations and holidays. And we wait for God to answer our prayers.

We may have to wait, but we don’t have to like it. We live in a world that glorifies instant gratification and fast food. We suggest the inventor of the microwave should be knighted and bemoan the days when it took a week to send a letter across the country.

So when God doesn’t immediately answer our prayers, it’s easy to feel discouraged. But sometimes His response to us is simply to wait on His timing. He reminds us to be strong and take courage because waiting is not for the faint of heart. It takes courage to face difficulties, move on after failure and overcome obstacles.

Sometimes we focus so much on the unpleasantness of waiting that we forget to be in the moment and notice what’s around us. Rushing through life does not allow us to stop and smell the flowers we plant and grow. Waiting gives us time to savor the moment. When we know we are waiting for the Lord, we know we’re in the right place.
