Weed and Feed Your Garden Daily

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

─ James 1:19-21 ESV

After an extremely busy winter and spring, it’s easy to see the neglect that often happens in your garden or yard. The dead things from winter and the uninvited weeds need to be removed. The soil begs for food and water before it may resemble the beauty it once displayed.

James compared our hearts to gardens – a place where the Word of God is planted in each of us to keep us flourishing in His will (James 1:21). When His Spirit lives within us, the Word of God takes root. In order for the garden of our hearts to become beautiful, it’s vital we give attention to our hearts every day, no matter what season we are in.

Much like pulling weeds, we must pluck the things in our hearts that grow contrary to God’s Word, so that sin doesn’t choke out the beauty and truth He’s planted. As new creatures in Christ, it takes some work on our part. We must remove the dead things from our past that try to creep back in and feed the soil of our hearts, so the things of God have plenty of room to grow unhindered.

Today’s One Thing

What does the garden of your heart look like? Ask the Lord if you need to give some extra attention in a certain area of your life today.
