When God Speaks in a Whisper
In this noisy world of iPhones, text messages, emails, tweets and all kinds of other voices vying for your attention, it can be hard to tune into God’s quiet, whispering one. And yet, God is talking to us all the time!
As the LORD was passing by, a fierce wind tore mountains and shattered rocks ahead of the LORD. But the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the LORD wasn’t in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire. But the LORD wasn’t in the fire. And after the fire there was a quiet, whispering voice.
─1 Kings 19:11-12 GW
The Bible is full of stories of people experiencing God in visible ways:
• Abraham saw the smoking firepot and blazing torch (Genesis 15:17).
• He got Moses’ attention with a burning bush (Exodus 3:2-4).
• He appeared to Saul (who became Paul) by shining a blinding light (Acts 9:3-5).
• The Israelites followed God through the desert as a cloud by day and a fire by night (Exodus 13:17-22).
God is speaking to you!
And in our verse today, the prophet Elijah looked for God when discouragement settled into his heart after a miraculous display of God’s power. Elijah took refuge in a cave while running from a queen who vowed to take his life.
As God passed by Elijah, a mighty wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks, but God was not in the wind! An earthquake shook the earth, but God was not in the earthquake. A fire roared, but again, God was not in the fire.
Then Elijah heard a gentle whisper. It was the voice of God.
God speaks to you in unexpected ways, but you have to be watching, listening and expecting to experience Him.
