When God Speaks through Pain

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. – Psalm 34:18 NKJV

Pain has a way of commanding our attention. Whether it comes through loss, disappointment, or suffering, we cannot simply ignore it. Pain is never easy, but it often becomes the place where we hear God most clearly. When life feels overwhelming, He isn’t distant—He is near, speaking words of comfort, strength, and hope.

If we’re honest, we don’t want pain. We pray for relief, healing, and for things to be made right. And yet, it’s often in our deepest pain that we encounter God in a way we never could in our comfort. When our hearts are broken, He draws near. When we are weak, He becomes our strength.

God whispers in your joy and shouts in your pain.

No one welcomes suffering, yet it is often in those dark moments that we realize just how much we need God. When life is easy, we can fool ourselves into thinking we are self-sufficient. But when pain enters, it strips away our illusions of control. Suddenly, we find ourselves on our knees, seeking comfort, seeking answers, seeking Him.

David understood this when he wrote, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit” (Psalm 34:18 NIV). Brokenness doesn’t repel God—it draws Him in. He doesn’t look away from our suffering; He moves toward it.

Even Jesus, in His greatest suffering on the cross, cried out to the Father. And in that moment, God was still working, redeeming, restoring, and bringing life from death. If He could bring resurrection from the deepest suffering, He can bring healing and hope into your pain, too.

Think about the moments when you’ve felt God’s presence most deeply. Were they in seasons of ease or in seasons of struggle? Many of us find that it’s in the valley, not on the mountaintop, where God speaks most clearly. His voice may not always bring immediate relief, but it brings reassurance: I am with you. You are not alone.

Today’s One Thing
If you are in a season of pain, take time today to be still before God. Instead of asking “Why, Lord?” try asking, “What do You want to show me in this season?” Lean into His presence, knowing that He is near, even when you can’t feel it.
