When Scales Fall From Our Eyes

“And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight…”

— Acts 9:18

Lisa trembled at the idea of moving to a foreign country. But she knew it was for the best, and after a month of living in a small apartment, cabin fever forced the family to venture out into their new world. The huge, modern mall seemed the safest place to go.

The familiar smell of coffee met her nose. People chatted over drinks at small tables just like at her Starbucks in the States. The familiar sound of a two-year-old throwing a tantrum turned her gaze. A frazzled mother crouched before a tired child offering a treat in exchange for his cooperation, a tactic Lisa had used countless times on her own children.

And, like the Apostle Paul, the scales suddenly fell off.

For the first time in her life, she could begin to see humanity the way God sees it. Beyond culture or skin color or language—she began to love and embrace her new neighbors and ultimately, her family’s new adventure.

As the sun began to set, people pulled out their cameras and clicked toward the horizon. It was as if for one quiet moment, the scales had been removed from everyone’s eyes…and the sight was glorious to behold.
