When the Lord Redirects Your Steps

You’ve carefully made plans, invested your time, calculated the costs, explored networks, and poured your heart into a direction you felt was right. Then, everything shifts. A door closes, variables change, or a situation deviates in ways you didn’t anticipate. In those moments, you might feel the sting of disappointment or wonder why things didn’t go as planned. While you may be caught off guard by these shifts, God is not. When He redirects your steps, it’s to align your plans with His greater purpose — a purpose always for your ultimate good.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
– Romans 8:28 ESV

God’s faithfulness shines when redirection occurs and you trust in Him. In geometric terms, the shortest distance between points A and B is a straight line, but in God’s plan, the straightest line may not always be the best for you. While you may encounter a detour, God sees opportunities to help refine, grow, and position you exactly where you need to be.

It’s tempting to view the steps you’ve taken as wasted or fruitless when the pathway or outcome isn’t what you expected. But each step you’ve taken has value, especially when trusting God. Those experiences—whether successes or setbacks—shape your character, teach you more about Him, and prepare you for what’s ahead. God doesn’t waste a single part of your story.

God doesn’t waste a single part of your story.

Instead of resisting redirection, lean into it. Trust God to lead you with His steady hands and His perfect plans. Look for the lessons and opportunities in the unexpected. When you surrender your plans to Him, you’ll find freedom from the pressure of needing to control every detail. Your faith grows as you see His faithfulness unfold step by step.

God is actively shaping you. His plans are always for your growth and His glory. When your plans deviate or doors close, embrace the change confidently, knowing that the Alpha and Omega guides you.

Today’s One Thing
Trust in the Lord, and declare, “I trust that when the Lord redirects my steps, He is working all things for my good and His glory.”
